Frequently Asked Questions

IELTS Academic Reading has 40 questions. Each correct answer scores 1 mark. The raw score (0–40) is then converted to a band (2.0–9.0) using the official Cambridge conversion table above. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so always attempt every question.

IELTS Listening also has 40 questions worth 1 mark each. The conversion table for Listening differs slightly from Reading — for example, 30–31 correct answers = Band 7.0 in Listening, whereas in Reading 30–32 correct = Band 7.0. Use the Listening tab above for accurate conversion.

Writing is assessed on four equally-weighted criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion is scored 0–9 in 0.5-band steps. The four scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest 0.5 band. Fractions below 0.25 round down; 0.25–0.74 round to 0.5; 0.75 and above round up to the next whole band.

The Overall Band Score is the mean of the four module scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking ÷ 4), rounded using Cambridge rounding: below 0.25 rounds down, 0.25–0.74 rounds to 0.5, and 0.75+ rounds up. For example: L7.5 + R7.0 + W6.5 + S7.0 = 28 ÷ 4 = 7.0 overall.

For Canada Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker Program), you need at least Band 6.0 in each of the four modules to meet the minimum language requirement. However, higher scores earn more CRS points: CLB 9 (Band 7.0 equivalent) adds significant CRS points, while CLB 10+ (Band 8.0+) is the top tier. Many candidates aiming for competitive draws target Band 7.5–8.0+ in all modules.

For Australia Skilled Migration (Subclasses 189, 190, 491), you need Competent English as a minimum — IELTS Band 6.0 in each module. Proficient English (Band 7.0+ in each module) adds 10 points to your points test score, and Superior English (Band 8.0+ in each module) adds 20 points. Many competitive occupations require Proficient or Superior English.
